Now it is our time to finally get to peek inside the massive new Math and Science Building at Mira Costa. Tonight, from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the public is welcome for a dedication ceremony followed by an Open House at the new yellow and red structure.
Over the last six weeks, Costa students and teachers have been enjoying the brand new building . Local firm Bernard Brothers Construction worked diligently to ensure the new building was ready on budget and on time for the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.
“This is a phenomenal facility and we are lucky to have top-of-line materials and equipment that provides 21st Century learning for our students.” stated Mr. Oystrick, AP Environmental Science Teacher at Costa.
The new Math and Science building, which was funded by the Measure BB Bond, was approved to break ground in November 2011 with a completion date of September 2013. The project was completed on time and on budget. The three-story building contains open windows and natural lighting. The classrooms are quite large and equipped with state-of-the-art white board technology, sound systems, microphones, large individual desks and air conditioning. The prep rooms and chemistry labs have Fume-Hoods at each desk for experiments and there is even a “roll-up wall” between classrooms to allow for expansion and sharing of labs. The physics rooms were designed with open-beams ceilings to allow for additional experiments using a pulley system, for example. There is even access to the roof for “drop experiments” in some of the advanced courses. The math classrooms are located along the sides of the building and have natural light and sound-proof walls.
The new building marks the completion of Phase I of the three-phase construction project at Mira Costa. Over the next year, existing classrooms will be modernized in Phase II, and Phase III will see the construction of several smaller interior buildings as well as a campus quad. You can follow the construction and see a video of the construction phases on the district’s website.
In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked Mira Costa High School as a top 100 school in the U.S. for Math and Science.
