JAMIE GRASS, EMILY HARLAN, and SAMANTHA RAM, Beyond Meat  beyondmeat revised

Several Mira Costa grads were found improving how and what the world eats.  Brent Taylor, MC’99, a UCLA and Wharton M.B.A. graduate, co-founded local startup Beyond Meat after he became intrigued with the global food supply while working at Dole Foods.  The Kleiner Perkins-backed company hopes to shift carnivores to healthier, tasty versions of plant-based protein that very closely mimic chicken and beef.  The company, whose products are sold in 1,000 stores nationwide, piqued the interests of Twitter founders as well as Bill Gates, who recently invested.

Cheers to Brent for recognizing our great local talent.  Amongst its 55 employees, you’ll find our three “under 30s” — Emily Harlan, MC’07, a UC Santa Barbara graduate, and Samantha Ram, MC’07, a University of San Diego graduate, who work on the digital marketing and media aspects of Beyond Meat, as well as Jamie Grass, MC’01, a University of Miami graduate, who works in channel marketing.

Brent feels Manhattan Beach schools gave him and his team the foundational skills to think globally, research well, and collaborate.  And that’s good for the South Bay overall – the two-year old startup is headquartered in El Segundo.
