Forget the Oscars, get your acceptance speeches out for top-notch education, Manhattan Beach. Lately, it has been an awards frenzy here in our schools with several MB folks bestowed numerous honors on local, state and national levels, somehow all related to our excellent public schools.

Manhattan Beach Middle School Principal John Jackson was recently selected as regional “Middle School Principal of the Year” by the Association of California Supervisors and Administrators and will be honored in Sacramento later this year …… MBMS Teacher Ro Schreiner was recognized as Manhattan Beach’s “Woman of Distinction” by 66th Assembly District, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, and Soroptomist International for her 50-plus years of teaching and inspiring Manhattan Beach students last month ….. MBEF’s own Executive Board member and VP of Communications Leanne Huebner was also recently recognized in Sacramento by the California State Assembly as South Bay’s “Woman of the Year” for her varied volunteer and advocacy work in public education ……

These recognitions just continue our Fall 2013 highlights. Mira Costa High School Choir Teacher Michael Hayden took home one of five “Teacher of the Year” awards amongst California’s 380,000 teachers..… Earlier this school year, Robinson Elementary School Principal Nancy Doyle accepted her school’s National Blue Ribbon School honor, just one of 15 schools in California to earn the distinction. …… And the state has more kudos too for MB Schools. Four of our five Manhattan Beach elementary schools are named finalists for California’s Distinguished School Designation ….. This lucky award-winning streak all started last spring when Superintendent Mike Matthews was recognized as our region’s “Superintendent of the Year” by CSA.

Incidentally, our students are also world-class achievers as well. Just one example is Mira Costa’s Model UN team, which has consistently won regional and national level competitions under the stellar direction of teacher Bob Timberlake. The team recently won first places in regional competitions on the West Coast AND on the East Coast on the same weekend! Mira Costa’s Model UN team is consistently THE team to beat, per Best Delegate blog.

OK, you’ve got the picture.

Our point is these accolades and awards are just a reflection of the true dedication and hard work our entire community puts forth in providing high quality public education to our children. Thank you to our teachers, administrators and parents who are committed to our schools achieving this excellence every day. Thanks to our parent community for doing their part and supporting and investing in MBEF to insure this excellence continues year after year.

Now, back to the books!
